What is Pupillary Distance (PD)?
Pupillary Distance (PD) is the precise measurement, in millimeters, between the centers of your pupils. This crucial measurement ensures your lenses are perfectly aligned with your eyes, allowing for optimal vision and comfort in your glasses.
- Adult PD typically ranges from 54 to 74 mm
- For children, PD usually falls between 43 and 54 mm
There are two common PD measurements:
- Far PD: Used for distance vision and essential for single vision, progressive, and office lenses.
- Near PD: Used for close-up tasks, important for bifocals and reading glasses.
It’s also normal for each eye to have slightly different PD values - the distance from the pupil to the nose can vary from side to side for both near and far measurements.
Important: Your prescription may have two PD measurements, both of which are important for multifocal orders.
